How I Cleared My Skin!!!
I gave my skin very little attention until the summer I turned 21. In high school, I stuck to a routine of an acne wash daily and nightly. In college I started experimenting more with makeup, following Youtube tutorials & creating artsy looks on my own. By summer 2015, I started noticing red bumps with whiteheads gathering on my cheeks and jawline. I tried countless products, thinking each one did something different, I'm still not sure if any of them helped. My acne never cleared completely, and to make it worse I now had acne scars and hyperpigmentation. I fought my acne all senior year in college. Then, once I moved home & then to NY for an internship summer 2016, suddenly my skin was flawless.
ok ok...not flawless...
But it was clear! I was using two different cleansers, SPF in the morning and after removing my makeup in the evening I would exfoliate and moisturize. After my internship ended, I moved back home to Pennsylvania...it was almost immediate the change in my skin texture. The red bumps were back. Again I suffered through these breakouts for about 8 months. I started to think the acne was related to stress because I was eating a vegetarian/vegan diet and exercising pretty regularly. From Sept to Dec 2016 my skin was riding a roller coaster of breakouts.
From January to April 2017 I was dealing with an obnoxious amount of stress. My face and skin mirrored that, and once I left my full-time job, I ventured to New Mexico for a week. The 6 days I was in the Southwest my skin was thriving! When I arrived home, the cycle repeated itself. I was so confused, was it the climate? Was it stress? Was it hormones? (p.s. I had gotten an IUD placed March 2017, but within a month my skin hadn't changed) I really started to attribute my acne to the weather..."maybe my skin will clear up in the summer, with the heat & sun..." (of course, I was wrong) I dealt with my skin for another 5 months.
I was too self-conscious to talk to a doctor, at one point I felt like I had outcast myself from all social activities because of my face. I didn't even want to go on vacation. I had a hard time finding, even applying, for job opportunities because my confidence was so low. I chose to edit all my pictures on Instagram & other social channels, hoping nobody would comment.
So finally, on October 18, 2017, I took three selfies and sent them to Curology. I was nervous, thinking to myself....is this really going to help...or just make it worse? Regardless how skeptical I was, I pursued my route. I received my first bottle in the mail and within about 8 days (8 DAYS!!!) I could see a difference. My whiteheads were gone, I didn't feel or look oily, and my skin felt less sensitive to the touch.
Curology sets you up with a dermatologist that gives you REAL advice! My doctor's name is Siri, she gave me great recommendations when I first took the quiz & was awaiting my first shipment. I was using coconut oil as a makeup remover & moisturizer...turns out COCONUT OIL is great for CLOGGING PORES!! She was able to provide more information & has helped me these past 6 months with my questions, I'm very thankful.
A few weeks after starting Curology, I lost my acne medication at a friend's sleepover. Within 2 days I could see my skin almost returning to its acne-prone state. One of the amazing qualities of the Curology service is you can decide when to have your order shipped, so I was able to get back on my regimen in no time.
I occasionally get a pimple or two close to my menstruation period, but other than that I'm clear! My skin texture went from hills and valleys to a smooth plane. I was so excited to see freckles and my peach fuzz return. Within the past month, April 2018, I have started to incorporate delicate exfoliants & toners, otherwise, I keep my routine simple with water, cleanser & my Curology at night.
As for photo editing, I keep it mostly to color enhancements now. My skin is still healing and mending itself. I am sure to check if a product is non-comedogenic or if it's going to clog my pores. I wear makeup every few days and keep it minimal, on the skin, for the every-day.
I want to also note, the most current photo (above) is taken with an iPhone 8, versus the first selfie taken on an iPhone 6, in case you're looking to know picture quality. Other photos were taken with a Sony A5100.
If you're struggling with acne and haven't found what the cause is or haven't found the solution to your problem, I really recommend trying Curology. The first month is free (plus like $5 for shipping) AND I PROMISE THIS POST IS NOT SPONSORED! Comment below with any question you may have!
Stay colorful & clear,
